Tottenham want Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez

Tottenham are rivalling London rivals West Ham in the pursuit of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to reports.

The North London side are hoping to bolster their attack with the potential of Fernando Llorente departing this summer, according to a report in The Mail.

The Hammers have been linked to a move for the Uruguayan for each of the past two windows with widespread reports of ongoing negotiations, while Barcelona have also been linked to the player.

Gomez is said to have a €50m release clause at Estadio Balaidos but should his side – who currently are 17th in La Liga – be relegated, this clause is set to halve to just €25m, making him imminently more affordable.

The Uruguayan striker netted 17 goals in La Liga last season in his first campaign in European football, leading to a series of top European clubs monitoring his progress.

Gomez has netted just twice in his last 13 appearances while the Galician club have struggled in the absence of his strike partner Iago Aspas, who returned for Saturday’s 3-2 win over Villarreal.

Gomez has hit 28 La Liga goals in 62 starts since joining from Defensor Sporting in 2017.
