Atletico Madrid fail in Diego Costa appeal

Atletico Madrid have seen their appeal against Diego Costa’s eight-match suspension rejected by the Spanish FA’s appeals committee.

The capital club had appealed against the length of the suspension handed down to their striker earlier this week and now have 15 days to appeal to TAD – the Administrative Court for Sport.

The striker was shown a straight red card during Saturday’s loss at Barcelona by referee Gil Manzano, who stated in his post-match report that Costa insulted his mother, and that was the reason for the dismissal.

Costa has denied using a derogatory term towards the referee and as expected an appeal was launched on his behalf by the club, but this has been unsuccessful.

There had initially been suggestions that the former Chelsea player would receive a 12-game ban, but this layoff will rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.
