Barcelona ‘twice came close’ to signing Manchester United’s Juan Mata – father

Barcelona have twice attempted to sign Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata according to the player’s father and agent.

The 30-year-old’s deal at Old Trafford expires in the summer and he is available to speak to other clubs.

“Juan’s contract ends in summer…interest from Barcelona? There has been talk of it,” Mata’s father cryptically told Onda Cero.

“In the past he has twice been close to Barcelona – the first time when he was at Valencia, when the club sold David Villa and David Silva to raise funds, then when he was at Chelsea.”

The playmaker initially moved to English football in 2011, joining Chelsea from Valencia, before a £37m transfer to Manchester United in January 2014.

Mata has netted 44 goals across 259 first-team appearances for the Red Devils and has 10 goals from 41 international caps with Spain.

His compatriot Ander Herrera is also out of contract at United this summer and is reported to have a pre-contract agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.
