Matthijs de Ligt ‘on the table’ for Barcelona – club president

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has confirmed the club are considering a move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt this summer.

The 19-year-old has been the captain of the Amsterdam-based club for over a year and has starred for club and country.

Widely regarded as one of the best upcoming talents in world football, the central defender is set to command a €75m fee from Ajax.

“There will be time to speak about him,” Bartomeu responded when asked in an exclusive ESPN FC interview about the Ajax defender.

“Each year the club has an interest in making signings and this summer will be the same. De Ligt, like the other best players, is on the table.

“He is a great player and a great centre-back. I know what will happen with him but it's not the moment [to talk].”

Bartomeu also discussed Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, saying that last summer’s transfer saga was ‘water under the bridge’ between the club and the player’.

“The documentary about his decision is water under the bridge,” added the Blaugrana supremo.

“It was spoken about a lot at the time. We have to look at the present, not the past.

“Each player weighs up what's the best option for them. They make their own decisions. He stayed at Atletico, who are a big club in Europe, one of the best in UEFA's rankings and [the team] we're fighting against for La Liga this season.”
