Robert Moreno: My toughest day as a professional

Long-serving Luis Enrique assistant Robert Moreno has confessed taking charge of Spain was his “toughest day as a professional.”

Moreno – previous number two at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – took the reins of La Roja as Enrique missed the game with urgent personal problems.

“This was the toughest day I have faced throughout my professional career,” Moreno told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“I received phone calls congratulating me on getting the role but there was nothing to congratulate and I hope this situation never happens again.

“This victory was all to do with Luis because he prepared for this match and devised a game-plan which we carried out, and the players performed well too of course.

“Now we have started the group with six points from six and we lead the group and considering the circumstances we played in here then we could not have done any better.

“Malta defended very deep and were organised as we expected, it is not easy to break those teams down and we are sad we could not score more.”
