Monchi confirms Arsenal rejection before Sevilla return

Sevilla’s returning sporting director Monchi has confirmed he rejected an approach from Arsenal before rejoining the Andalusian club.

Monchi is back at Sevilla after two years away, having been the club’s sporting director between 2000 and 2017, following a mixed stint at Roma.

He had been heavily linked with a move to the North London club, which would have seen link up with former Sevilla boss Unai Emery.

“I would like to thank Arsenal for their interest in me,” Monchi told reporters, as cited by Estadio Deportivo.

“They were interested in me and it was an offer that I evaluated a lot, but ultimately I had to return to the club who I knew and who convinced me the most.

“Sevilla were not the biggest club to offer me a deal and there were other options on the table, but the sporting project of this club is the most important thing.

“I consider this club to be my home.”

Sevilla president Jose Castro added, as cited by ESPN FC: “Monchi is a special person. He has a contract like everyone else at the club, but it's an indefinite one.”
