Bartomeu: Barcelona to offer Lionel Messi contract extension

Barcelona are set to offer club captain Lionel Messi a contract extension this summer, according to club president Josep Bartomeu.

The Argentine international's current deal expires in 2021, however the club are offering to lengthen that to either 2022 or 2023, bringing his time at the club to over two decades.

His last extension, signed in 2017, included a release clause of €700m, and the new deal is set to increase that amount even further, despite the forward turning 32 this summer.

Messi has scored 35 goals in all competitions so far this season, and Bartomeu was full of praise when he made the announcement.

"Leo has a contract until 2021, and we will be renewing it.

"He is strong and mentally better than ever.

"He has the ambitiono to win titles."
