West Ham still want to pay €50m release clause for Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez

West Ham United remain intent on activating the €50m (£43.5m) release clause of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to reports.

The London Evening Standard insists the East London club are still keen on the deal despite Marko Arnautovic penning a new deal and committing his immediate future to the club.

This follows on from a report last week in Radio Vigo, part of Cadena Ser, which confirmed an entourage from the Hammers are in Vigo to discuss a deal for the player, whom they also approached last summer.

The Uruguayan striker is said to have a release clause of €50m at Balaidos and netted in a recent 4-2 loss at Rayo Vallecano.

“I believe that we will retain our most important players because it is the intention of the club to be strong,” Minambres is quoted as saying by a recent Sky Sports reports.

“But with the English (clubs) you never know.”

Gomez has hit 26 La Liga goals in 51 starts since joining from Defensor Sporting in 2017.
