La Liga Week 20 Round Up: Barcelona stay five points clear, Real Madrid move into third

Second half goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi maintained Barcelona's lead at the top of the La Liga table.

Messi came off the bench to get the defending champions over the line in a 3-1 win over Leganes. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the first half, before being withdrawn injured after the break. Martin Braithwaite equalised for the away side, before Suarez, then Messi secured the win.

Real Madrid returned to the top four thanks to a 2-0 home win over rivals Sevilla, as late goals from Casemiro and Luka Modric sealed a vital win for Santiago Solari's side.

Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid cruised to a routine 3-0 victory away at Huesca, with goals from Antoine Griezmann, Santiago Arias and Koke keeping them in second place, five points behind Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona.

Elsewhere Rayo Vallecano stretched their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-2 draw at home to Real Sociedad, while Athletic Bilbao eased their relegation worries with a 1-1 draw against Villarreal at San Mames – as the visitors remain three points adrift of safety.

Sixth place Getafe secured an impressive 4-0 win over Europa League qualification rivals Alaves at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, with Alaves now just a point ahead of them in fifth.

Valencia boosted their hopes of a European finish to the 2018-19 campaign with a 2-1 win away at Celta Vigo, thanks to late goals from Ferran Torres and Rodrigo Moreno, with the latter scoring for the first time since December 15th.

Celta are now just a point above relegation, with four successive defeats in La Liga piling the pressure on manager Miguel Cardoso.

A last minute penalty from Sergio Canales capped a thrilling 3-2 win for Real Betis over Girona, to hand Quique Setien his first win of 2019, as their visitors winless run stretched to seven La Liga games.

Levante strengthened their case for remaining in La Liga with a 2-0 home win over Real Valladolid, their first in six league games, as Valladolid are without a win in 2019.
