Bernd Schuster: “Real Madrid move for Joachim Low would not be a surprise”

Joachim Low is the ideal candidate to take over at Real Madrid this summer, according to their former boss Bernd Schuster.

Schuster enjoyed success as a player at the club during the 1980's, winning two league titles, before returning to win La Liga as manager during the 2007-08 season, and he believes his German compatriot is the perfect fit for Real.

Schuster revealed he has spoken with Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez about Low, according to reports in German newspaper Die Welt.

"I spoke with him (Perez) at an honorary event and I explicitly mentioned Low.

"He reacted by looking at me oddly, as if I had surprised him.

"Germans are very highly regarded at Real and it would not surprise me if Real tried to sign Low this summer."

The club confirmed Santiago Solari as their new head coach in October, following the departure of Julen Lopetegui, with a contract up until June 2021. However they have been linked with moves for former manager Jose Mourinho and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, should they look to make a change in the summer.

Low extended his contract as manager of the German national team until 2022, following their group stage exit at the 2018 World Cup, and the German FA have stated their faith in his ability for the next two international tournaments.
