La Liga Week 18: Sevilla & Atletico Madrid stalemate

Sevilla and Atletico Madrid couldn’t be separated in La Liga Week 18 as Espanyol and Huesca finally won.

A rare double-header on Friday kicked off with Levante salvaging a late 2-2 draw at home to Girona.

Portu and Aleix Garcia cancelled out Jose Luis Morales’ equaliser, while Sergio Postigo was shown a straight red card with 20 minutes remaining.

However, Coke Andujar saved Levante from the jaws of a third straight defeat to move them level with Girona in mid-table.

Espanyol ended a rotten run of six successive losses, edging out Leganes in a 1-0 victory.

Man-of-the-moment Borja Iglesias decided the match in only the ninth minute as Lega finished with 10 men, courtesy of Gerard Gumbau’s second yellow in stoppage time.

Similar joy was in store for Rayo Vallecano, who narrowly beat Real Valladolid 1-0 on Saturday.

Alvaro Medran scored the only goal inside the first minute to hand Rayo their third win in five games, leaving them just a point away from safety.

Huesca gave their survival hopes a timely boost with a surprise 2-1 success over Europe-chasing Real Betis.

The basement boys had not won since the opening day of the season and staged a second-half show to secure their first-ever home victory in La Liga as goals from David Ferreiro and Christian Rivera left Antonio Sanabria’s penalty in vain.

Neither Eibar nor Villarreal could break the deadlock in Sunday’s early kick-off, extending both sides’ runs of draws.

Sevilla’s top-of-the-table clash with Atletico Madrid was also an even affair, but the 1-1 draw at least served up some goals.

Wissam Ben Yedder continued his impressive knack of scoring decisive goals, doing so for the fifth consecutive game he netted in.

However, Antoine Griezmann struck home a free kick to keep Atleti second, although Barcelona extended their lead at the top to five points.
