Barcelona’s Gerard Pique: “There is no problem with VAR”

Gerard Pique has voiced his support for the use of VAR technology and believes criticism of it in Spain ‘is a cultural issue’.

The Barcelona defender, who helped his side to a 2-1 win at Getafe, was speaking in relation to criticism of the technology after Real Madrid were denied a penalty in their loss to Real Sociedad.

“When VAR was not here, it was controversial that it wasn’t and now that it is here, there is controversy because of it,” Pique told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“I have said this in the past but this is a country who loves to have controversy and sometimes we create it when it does not exist.

“That is probably a cultural issue, but the important thing for football is that VAR is now in place to help officials.

“Ernesto Valverde’s future? The decision will be up to him and we all have to respect him as he is the Coach.

“I believe he is doing a fantastic job here, he is bringing calmness to the team and achieving the results we all want.

“A title race? I don’t believe it’s a bad thing for the league if we have a cushion in points to our rivals, but it is great to come back from Christmas with a win – we have not done this in years!”
