Thibaut Courtois: Diego Simeone uses Real Madrid for popularity

Thibaut Courtois slammed Diego Simeone for stating the goalkeeper had to join Real Madrid for FIFA recognition. “He criticises us to become popular.”

Courtois spent three years working under Simeone at Atleti, winning a Liga title in 2014, but the Coach suggested the Belgian’s move across the capital was motivated by selfishness.

“Simeone criticises Madrid to become popular with his fans,” he said after Los Blancos’ 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

“He always does it because Madrid are the best club in the world. Everyone’s opinions must be respected, but I was at Atleti for three years and when you’re always going up against Real Madrid, who are the best team in the world, you’re going to say things to gain popularity among your fans.

“In my case, he said I’d won that trophy because I played for Real Madrid, but I was at Chelsea during the World Cup.

“Also, the voting for The Best FIFA Awards was finished in July and I wasn’t at Madrid yet. I don’t think it’s fair that he belittles me.

“Oblak’s also a great goalkeeper and he could’ve had more points, but there are a lot of people who vote.

“You have to do a lot to hurt me and I know why Simeone said what he said.”
