Junior Firpo: ‘I want to stay at Real Betis for a very long time’

Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are tracking Real Betis wing-back Junior Firpo but the player wants to stay at the club ‘for a very long time’.

The Dominican-born defender only made his first-team debut at Los Verdiblancos earlier this year but has now established himself as a regular starter, making 30 appearances.

Junior agreed a long-term contract extension at the Seville-based club until June 2023 only in August and his new deal is said to contain a release clause in the proximity of €50m.

“My thoughts are now with Betis and I am very happy in Seville,” Firpo told Real Betis media.

“My girlfriend is pregnant, we are going to have our child here in Seville, I am close to my family and my parents who are from Malaga – that is where I grew up.

“And Seville as a city, today in December with 18- or 20-degrees training, it is a marvel. Betis fans should be calm – I am very happy, calm and I want to continue here for a long time.

“It is true that there is interest from other clubs, but this does not concern me.”

The left wing-back is now a Spain Under-21 international after moving to the nation aged six and is now being monitored by several English clubs, report El Mundo Deportivo.

Firpo has scored in his most recent three of his last four La Liga appearances – against Celta Vigo, Barcelona and Real Sociedad.
