Athletic Club sack Eduardo Berizzo, appoint Gaizka Garitano

Eduardo Berizzo has been sacked by Athletic Club Bilbao after a 13-game winless run in La Liga, with Gaizka Garitano replacing him in the hotseat.

The Basque giants lost 3-0 at Levante on Monday night with Berizzo stating that ‘if my resignation helps, then it will happen’, with his side sitting in the relegation zone.

After an opening day late victory at home to Leganes, Athletic have failed to win in their 13 La Liga games since, picking up just eight points in that timeframe.

Athletic’s club statement on Tuesday morning added ‘Gaizka Garitano will be responsible for leading the Athletic Club's first team’.

Garitano has been coaching the club’s Bilbao Athletic youth team and has previous first-team managerial experience at Real Valladolid, Eibar and Deportivo La Coruna.
