Barcelona rescue late point at Atletico Madrid

Ousmane Dembele silenced his critics as his last-gasp equaliser rescued Barcelona a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

A dour affair sprung into life when Diego Costa scored with its first attempt on target, but Dembele came off the bench to not only put reports of ill-discipline behind him but also salvage Barca a point.

Arturo Vidal replaced the injured Ivan Rakitic in Barca’s midfield, the Croat having picked up a hamstring injury while representing Croatia on international duty. Elsewhere, Nelson Semedo came in at right-back, allowing Sergi Roberto to partner Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez up top in Philippe Coutinho's continued absence.

Atleti, for their part, were without three of their first-choice defenders in Juanfran Torres, Josema Gimenez and Diego Godin, so Filipe Luis was joined by Santiago Arias, Lucas Hernandez and Stefan Savic at the back. Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa led their forward line, hoping to add to their combined tally of four League goals.

Diego Simeone had yet to beat the Blaugrana in La Liga, with Los Colchoneros’ last win coming all the way back in February 2010.

The flashpoint of a first half without any shots on target was an unfortunate one as Sergi Roberto was forced off with a hamstring injury.

Indeed, little changed until the 77th minute when Costa peeled off Rafinha at the far post from a corner and headed home the game's first real attempt.

Ernesto Valverde replied by throwing on Malcom and Dembele, who was found unmarked down the right before coolly slotting a finish through Jan Oblak's legs as the clock struck 90.

The Catalans remain top of La Liga by a point but have now gone three matches without a win and could be toppled by Sevilla if they beat Real Valladolid on Sunday.
