Julen Lopetegui linked to USA job

The USA national side are considering appointing Julen Lopetegui who was sacked by Real Madrid last month, say reports.

Diario AS are one of a number of outlets citing how US officials believe the Spaniard is the prime candidate to take the reins at the vacant post.

The position has been vacant for over 12 months since Bruce Arena resigned after he failed to guide the nation to this summer’s World Cup competition.

It was the first time in 32 years that the nation failed to reach football’s most famed competition with a new, young squad emerging – which is why Lopetegui is viewed as a prime candidate.

The 52-year-old coached Spain at Under-17, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level before going unbeaten through 22 games as national team boss before being controversially dismissed on the eve of the World Cup this year.

Lopetegui was in charge of Madrid for just 14 games, winning and losing six games apiece, and is said to be keen to return to work.
