Javier Tebas adamant ‘Girona v Barcelona in Miami’

La Liga president Javier Tebas insists Girona’s La Liga clash with Barcelona scheduled for January will be held in Miami, despite widespread opposition.

The league chief is intent on bringing matches abroad with January’s scheduled match between Girona and Barcelona on 26 January earmarked to be taken to the United States.

Earlier this year, Tebas confirmed a 15-year agreement had been struck with American entertainment company Relevent to stage matches in the US.

However, the move has been met with strong opposition including from FIFA, the Spanish FA and the AFE Spanish players union.

On Wednesday, Real Madrid formally stated their opposition to the idea, stating that it interrupted ‘the integrity and the equality of the competition’.

“It was what I predicted,” Tebas briefly answered when quizzed about Madrid’s letter at an even on Wednesday.

“Of course, it will take place.”

A report in Cadena Ser has outlined how Tebas is keen to take the issue to court in order for the game to be staged abroad.

Girona and Barcelona have both given their approvals to the plans, but the game cannot take place without the green light from those bodies who have stated their outright opposition.
