Eleven Sports will no longer show Saturday afternoon La Liga

Eleven Sports, the company who broadcast La Liga matches to the UK and Ireland, will no longer show matches on Saturday afternoon.

There is a rule across the UK which states that matches cannot be televised between 14.45 and 17.15 (GMT), designed to protect matches at the traditional 15.00 kick-off time.

La Liga regularly schedule matches for 15.15 (GMT) and the broadcaster has shown two matches, which has breached the rule, but has now stated it will no longer do this.

The company, who bought the rights for Spanish football from Sky Sports this summer, had argued they were streaming the matches rather than showing them on TV.

“Out of respect for the wishes of our partners, we will for the time being no longer show matches during the Saturday afternoon blackout period,” read an Eleven Sports statement.

“Fans in the UK should have the freedom and the choice to watch these games legally through the official rights holder, as they do all over the world.

“Regrettably, intense pressure from stakeholders within the football establishment means that football fans across the country do not have this option.

“We maintain our strong view that the rule is unfit for the modern, digital era – particularly for overseas games which we hold the rights to.

“With the best interests of football fans at heart, we are currently considering all legal and regulatory options, including the referral of the case to the appropriate authorities.”
