Barcelona have decided to sign a central defender this January but believe a deal for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt (pictured) is ‘impossible’.
Catalan radio station RAC1 reported the news on Monday after Thomas Vermaelen was officially ruled out of action for the next six weeks with a hamstring injury.
The Belgian joins first choice central defender Samuel Umtiti on the sidelines for Ernesto Valverde’s side, with new signing Clement Lenglet and the out-of-form Gerard Pique now the only fit options.
Barca are short on defenders with no senior understudy to Jordi Alba at left-back following Lucas Digne’s departure, while Yerry Mina joined the Frenchman in moving to Everton this summer.
Ajax sporting director Marc Overmas ruled out the possibility of de Light – a rumoured target for Barca – leaving in January: “the chance of a move is zero percent.”
