Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez insists his side did not doubt themselves despite a slow start to the campaign.
Diego Simeone’s side picked up just five points from their opening four games but their form has improved since, with five wins from six including a Madrid derby draw.
“We did not doubt ourselves at any point,” Gimenez told Atleti club media.
“Now we are in a strong position and hopefully we can take advantage of that, but we all have self-belief and know what we are capable of.
“It was said that we were out of sorts and our league season was over after a few games, because it was just negative results.
“This is a team who continues to grow and develop, while I just want to help them in the best possible way and my teammates motivate me and continue to improve my game.”
The Uruguayan defender signed a new long-term contract at Los Rojiblancos this summer until 2023 with his new deal including a €120m release clause.
