Sevilla wanted to sign Argentina international Giovani Lo Celso, now at rivals Real Betis, before joining Paris Saint-Germain.
The central midfielder is on a season-long loan deal from the Parisian club, with current Real Valladolid sports director Miguel Angel Gomez – who spent 19 seasons at Sevilla – making the revelation.
“We loved Celso at Sevilla so Monchi went to sign him,” Gomez is cited as saying by El Mundo Deportivo.
“But Paris Saint-Germain came in and paid €10m to Rosario for him, and that was a lot for a 20-year-old at the time.
“Real Betis are in a really strong cycle, a high level of play, they are in Europe and are signing players of the calibre of Lo Celso and William Carvalho.
“Valladolid are a team who fight for every ball and will battle every minute, so we know we will have less possession and a different gameplan, we must work as a block.”
