Marcelino ‘proud’ of Valencia’s draw with Manchester United

Marcelino expressed his ‘pride’ at watching Valencia hold Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“We played like a very solid team and posed them problems but missed the final pass and finish,” he said after his side’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

“Still, I’m proud of the performance we gave for 90 minutes. There were five games left after Juve, and that experience helped us gauge how we’d compete in the Champions League.

Tonight we applied what we learned from that game. We were a solid and difficult team to beat, who gave away very little.

“There’s a lot of competition here, but the next game we’re going to play will allow us to fight for the group.

“There’s room for improvement, but we’re happy with the game we played. There were times when it looked like we could beat them.

“I won’t discuss the referee. He whistled how he called it. A team show improvement when they’re balanced.

“We’re not conceding goals right now, but they have never had any big chances. We’ve improved in all aspects.

“We’re more intense, we’re playing better, we’re getting into our opponents’ box more and they are less.

“We’ve also got back players who were injured, while the other players who arrived late have improved their physical condition.

“Mourinho was very affectionate with me before and after the game. He’s a Coach who has won an incredible number of trophies and I always try to learn from him.

“I thanked him for the treatment he gave us.”
