Real Madrid’s Marcelo to miss Madrid derby

Real Madrid defender Marcelo is set to miss Saturday’s Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid with a calf injury, it is reported.

The Brazilian defender limped off in the second half of Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat at Sevilla and whilst he told reporters it was ‘just a pain in the calf’, Marca say he is definitely unavailable for Atleti.

Madrid Coach Julen Lopetegui said of Marcelo after the match: “It appears he has a tear, but he isn’t sure yet. We will run tests tomorrow and evaluate the situation.”

The European champions ended Wednesday’s game with 10 players due to the injury occurring after all three substitutes had already been used.

Madrid do not have a natural left-back as back-up to Marcelo following Theo Hernandez’s loan exit to Real Sociedad, but it is possible Nacho Fernandez, who played right-back against Sevilla, could switch.

Dani Carvajal is set to return for Saturday’s mouth-watering tie, but Isco remains unavailable after an operation on his appendix.
