Free-scoring Sevilla maul Real Madrid

Real Madrid missed the chance to move top of La Liga after they crashed to their heaviest away defeat in three years, going down 3-0 at free-scoring Sevilla.

Sevilla picked up from where they left off in their last two games to make it 14 goals in three on Wednesday, while winning their fourth straight Liga match against Madrid on home soil.

The Andalusians partnered in-form pair Andre Silva and Wissam Ben Yedder up top. Los Blancos, on the other hand, stuck with Thibaut Courtois in goal but were without stalwarts Dani Carvajal and Isco.

Sevilla immediately took the game to Madrid and went ahead early on as Jesus Navas’ cut-back was swept in by Silva.

Another Sevilla counterattack soon after saw Navas break clear down the right. Courtois parried away the winger’s shot, yet he could do nothing about Silva’s rebound.

The post prevented Gareth Bale from firing a goal back for Madrid, but their defence was at sixes and sevens again when Franco Vazquez blasted a shot against the woodwork.

Nonetheless, Ben Yedder read a ball over the top and lifted a finish over Courtois just before half-time.

A turning point was dismissed by VAR as it correctly ruled out Modric’s chip, the footage showing the midfielder to be a step offside.

However, Tomas Vaclik did turn away Modric’s flicked finish, before Courtois smothered a Ben Yedder drive and then the resulting scramble.

If the Croatian’s disallowed goal wasn’t confirmation of a miserable day at the office for Madrid, it came when the former Basel goalkeeper blocked Bale one-on-one.

As for Sevilla, it could’ve got even better when Silva broke into space down the right, latching on to a long ball, but Vazquez ballooned the striker’s cut-back.

Mariano Diaz was given a run-out at the ground he could’ve called home, had Madrid not hijacked Sevilla’s deal, but the visitors ended the game with 10 men as Marcelo pulled up.

Julen Lopetegui’s side ultimately fell to their worst loss on their travels in three years, since Atletico thrashed them 4-0 in February 2015.
