Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to make more history

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi will make yet more history this evening as the foreign player with the most appearances in La Liga.

Barring any late surprises, Messi will play his 423rd game for Barca in the top flight on Sunday against Girona.

In doing so, he will surpass current record holder and ex-teammate Dani Alves, who made 422 appearances for the Blaugrana and Sevilla combined.

The No 10 debuted in La Liga on October 16, 2004, coming on for the final eight minutes against Espanyol at their then-home of Montjuic.

Since then, the 31-year-old has won 320, drawn 66 and lost just 37 of his top-tier matches.

Former Deportivo La Coruna and Atletico Madrid midfielder Donato made 466 Primera appearances but is an exceptional case, despite being born in Brazil, as he represented Spain at international level.
