Real Madrid’s Mariano Diaz eyeing Spain call-up

Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz is eyeing a place in the Spain national team after opening his account for the club.

The Dominican-born frontman scored on his second debut for the European champions, against Roma on Wednesday, having enjoyed a prolific season with Lyon last year.

“My aim now is to be called up by the Spanish national team,” Mariano is cited as saying by Marca.

“It would be a dream to receive a call from Luis Enrique, but for now I’m happy to be involved with Madrid and to score a goal to open my account.

“It was a special moment for me to come on and help the team, and thanks to Marcelo’s assist it ensured I was able to cap my return in the best way.

“Julen Lopetegui’s instructions were to press high up the pitch, to replicate my performances in training and always look to maintain the ball.

“There is much greater pressure when playing at this club because of the expectations, but I am so grateful for the chance to return.”
