Rayo Vallecano stadium ‘ready’ to reopen after construction work

Rayo Vallecano’s stadium in Vallecas is due to reopen in time for next weekend’s clash with Alaves following construction work.

It was announced in late August that Rayo’s third matchday clash at home to Athletic Club Bilbao would be postponed due to safety fears amid ongoing rebuilding work, with a reopening date set back to mid-October.

La Liga had held a meeting with the community of Madrid before coming to the decision, despite the ground already hosting the visit of Sevilla in the first round of matches.

The clashes against Alaves and Espanyol had been set to be postponed or have their venues reversed, but Onda Cero now say a ramp up in the work means they will be given the green light.

The Campo de Futbol de Vallecas is owned by the community of Madrid while construction company Fonsan had recently been granted an extension of their work.

There have been numerous photos circulated by fans of the unfit state of the stadium, including lose wiring, debris and unsafe passages.
