The prospects of a La Liga match being staged in the United States are less likely following a high-profile meeting on Wednesday, say reports in Spain.
Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales met with FIFA head Gianni Infantino and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, all of whom voiced their disapproval for the move, claims Marca.
The report states that the meeting in Madrid has derailed hopes of Girona playing Barcelona in Miami in January for several reasons.
The Spanish FA believe it would damage the league and was not in the interest of fans or players while FIFA believe it is ‘placing business above football’.
The Spanish government is also not happy about the proposal, believing it will give a PR edge to the Catalan independence movement due to the teams involved.
Girona and Barcelona, alongside La Liga, had formally submitted a request to the Spanish FA earlier this week and whilst no reply has been given, it does not look optimistic.
Last week, Girona confirmed they were open to the proposal because they see a "great opportunity for expansion" for the club and the city.
La Liga released a press release on Tuesday confirm Delfi Geli and Josep Maria Bartomeu, the presidents of both clubs, had jointly-signed the letter alongside league chief Javier Tebas.
The game is scheduled to be played on 26 January 2019 with a proposed 8.45pm CEST kickoff (7.45pm UK time) at the Miami Hard Rock Stadium, with the request submitted on Monday night.
Girona, who have only hosted Barca once at the Estadi Montilivi in a competitive match before but are said to be one of four top-flight clubs who support moving matches to the United States.
