La Liga president Javier Tebas has confirmed they are in talks for Girona and Barcelona to be held in the United States in January.
The league’s chief, who is behind the proposals to play matches across the Atlantic, said Girona’s City Football Group ownership, who also own Manchester City, were influential in persuading the Catalan club.
“It is almost certain that (Girona v Barcelona) will be the first match in the United States,” Tebas told Onda Cero’s El Transistor show.
“This idea is all about the long-term benefits rather than just a one-off match, and it will be only be for those clubs who volunteer to take part.
“The strategy and sponsorship will help expands clubs whose fan base is lesser than others and Girona were persuaded partly by their ownership and also Stephen Ross (at the head of Relevant).
“There are several clubs who have a similar standard to Girona who are interested in this venture.
“Relevant, as a company, will cover all the costs for clubs and players.”
Girona, who have only hosted Barca once at the Estadi Montilivi in a competitive match before, released a statement to clarify they accepted the proposal because they see a "great opportunity for expansion" for the club and the city.
