Girona accept La Liga US proposal

Girona have accepted the proposal to play their scheduled home La Liga match against Barcelona in Miami in January.

The Catalan club confirmed via a statement on Thursday that they were open to the idea and would look to work with players, fans and other doubters.

Girona, who have only hosted Barca once at the Estadi Montilivi in a competitive match before, said they accepted the proposal because they see a "great opportunity for expansion" for the club and the city.

Diario AS had reported they will receive €4.5m for the match while 1,500 fans will be given free air travel and accommodation for such a match.

The same report suggested that up to 5,000 Girona season ticket holders will also be given a free ticket to their match at the Camp Nou this season.

The talk comes about following La Liga striking a 15-year deal with Relevent to stage La Liga fixtures in the United States, a move which has caused huge controversy.

Last month, the Spanish players union (AFE) confirmed that players would consider strike action in their opposition to such plans.
