Girona v Barca set for the US

Girona’s home league clash with Barcelona, scheduled for late January, appears to be the first La Liga game to be played abroad, say reports.

The two are scheduled to go head-to-head at the Estadio Montilivi (pictured) in late January but the front page of Tuesday’s L’Esportiu in the Catalan city leads with ‘We are all off to Miami’.

The front page leads with all season ticket holders being reimbursed with missing the fixture, which is a local derby and would have been only the second time Barca have visited their neighbours in an official match.

The talk comes about following La Liga striking a 15-year deal with Relevent to stage La Liga fixtures in the United States, a move which has caused huge controversy.

Last month, the Spanish players union (AFE) confirmed that players would consider strike action in their opposition to such plans.
