Machin fumes at Roque Mesa red

Sevilla Coach Pablo Machin was left fuming by the ‘ridiculous’ red card for midfielder Roque Mesa, stating it ‘changed the game’.

The central midfielder was sent-off for a second yellow card after blocking Real Betis goalkeeper Pau Lopez from taking a quick throw out, with the aggressor of the incident up for debate.

“It was a ridiculous decision that changed the game,” Machin told reporters, as cited by Estadio Deportivo.

“When you have the technology to see this, you cannot send a footballer off for this and indeed, it should have been a penalty and a red card for the goalkeeper, it completely changed the game.

“Roque was outraged with the decision because he knew he had already been booked and he told me that it was the goalkeeper who hit him, and the images corroborate that information.

“We had chances to win the game, Mercado’s header over from the Navas cross but when the red card came the game changed.”

The game was poised at 0-0 at the time of the red card but a late Joaquin header won the match for Betis.
