Rayo Vallecano stadium closed

Rayo Vallecano’s stadium in Vallecas has been closed until mid-October due to safety fears amid ongoing rebuilding work.

La Liga held a meeting with the community of Madrid on Monday before coming to the decision, despite the ground already hosting the visit of Sevilla in the first round of matches.

As a result, Rayo’s match with Athletic Club Bilbao this weekend has been postponed indefinitely while upcoming matches against Alaves and Espanyol are also in doubt.

The Campo de Futbol de Vallecas is owned by the community of Madrid while construction company Fonsan has recently been granted an extension of their work.

There have been numerous photos circulated by fans of the unfit state of the stadium, including lose wiring, debris and unsafe passages.

It is unlikely Rayo will groundshare in the meantime, with early indications suggesting their scheduled home games in this period will be reversed so that they play away.
