Spanish Players Union blast La Liga

The Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) has criticised La Liga’s deal to start playing league matches in the United States.

The Spanish top flight agreed a 15-year partnership with US company Relevent to start staging games in the nation from 2018/19 onwards, but the AFE said players were not ‘bargaining chips’.

“Like usual, La Liga has not consulted the opinions of the players and has made a move that only benefits themselves,” read a statement.

“This overlooks players health and even more so the feelings of fans who are forced to watch their team abroad.

“Footballers are much more than just bargaining chips which can be used as part of a business decision.”

The decision has been met with a fairly negative reaction both in the national and international press.
