Simeone wary of Lopetegui’s Madrid

Diego Simeone admits it is hard to judge how opposite number Julen Lopetegui will set up his Real Madrid side in Wednesday’s Super Cup clash.

Lopetegui has not managed a competitive game for the European champions since replacing Zinedine Zidane in June, with the Atletico Madrid boss wary of their threat.

“It is difficult as you only have pre-season as a template,” Simeone is cited by Marca as telling reporters.

“Their most recent matches are a good indicator perhaps, but we know they press high when losing the ball and try to impose themselves in their opposition’s area.

“This was the approach of Lopetegui when he was managing the Spain side and it is logical he would do the same at club level.”

Simeone was then asked about the summer business and how that might reflect on proceedings: “We have different budgets, so we must ensure that in motivation and hunger we are unbeatable.

“It is significant that good players want to come here and that youngsters want to stay as it allows us to improve as a club.

“We have signed a lot of good players but this does not translate into a stronger side, as everyone needs to work hard and as a unit.”
