Inter boss Luciano Spalletti has played down suggestions Luka Modric will join from Real Madrid but admitted ‘he would make us even stronger’.
The Croatian international – who starred at this summer’s World Cup – had been linked with a move to the Nerazzurri, where his countrymen Sime Vrsaljko, Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic all play.
“Modric? I don’t know what’s going to happen with him,” Spalletti told reporters.
“I’m just happy that someone of Luka’s quality and prestige was interested in coming to Inter as this is very important for us.
“The club should be praised for being linked with Modric but it is very likely that he will stay in Madrid until the end of the season, because they will still want to be able to count on such a talented player.
“I think that is what will happen but we are such a strong side regardless and if Modric were to join us then we would be even stronger.”
Inter are thought to have offered Modric a six-year contract, which would see him play with them for four years, before spending two at their Chinese sister club Jiangsu Suning.
However, over the weekend reports in both Marca and Diario AS say Madrid will offer him a new deal which would ‘significantly increase’ his wage packet at the Bernabeu.
