Espanyol goalkeeper Diego Lopez is hoping to complete his contract with the Catalans despite being 38-years-of-age when it expires.
Lopez’s current agreement still has two years to run and he is expecting Espanyol to be more competitive in the 2018-19 campaign following a good pre-season.
“I’ve still got two years left on my contract here and my intention is to complete it, which I also think is something the club wants,” said Lopez in an interview with Marca.
“If things go wrong then we’d negotiate my exit, but I want to continue here and I want to do that in a positive manner.
“I want to play and return the confidence the club has shown in me. I’ll try to be first choice and feature in the majority of matches in those two years.
“We are all very happy and hopeful with this new project. Training in pre-season has been very demanding but also very enjoyable.
“We are getting together a hard-working group of players who are excited for the new campaign.”
Former Real Madrid and Milan stopper Lopez was asked about midfielder Sergi Darder’s comments last week that Espanyol must try and win La Liga next season, although he struck a more realistic note.
“I think he wanted to say something else and his words were misinterpreted,” he explained. “It’s obvious that we are not going to win the league.
“But we are going to fight to win every game. This is a fighting club. We are very optimistic and are working so that everyone is in the best condition possible to give everything.”
