Mourinho backs Lopetegui

Jose Mourinho says he can empathise with the pressure new Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui is under at Real Madrid.

Lopetegui quit the Spain national team job on the eve of the World Cup to take the reins at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Manchester United Coach Mourinho revealed he too gave up his life in Italy with Inter to move to the Spanish capital in May 2010.

Moreover, Mourinho maintains he is confident that the 51-year-old former Porto man will be a success in La Liga this season.

“I wish Julen the best of luck as I’ve known him for over 20 years. He’s a great guy and a great Coach, “said Mourinho after seeing his team beat Los Blancos 2-1 in a friendly in Miami.

“When I went to Madrid I was still in Italy with Inter and we’d just won the Champions League, so I don’t think I was any less professional for doing that. I think he will be a success.”

In addition, Mourinho disclosed that he thought eight years ago that Lopetegui would end up coaching Real Madrid one day.

“When I trained Inter I knew he would go to Real Madrid. And that was in 2010!” he revealed.
