Mohamed: “Iago Aspas staying at Celta”

New Celta Vigo boss Antonio Mohamed has confirmed Iago Aspas and Maxi Gomez will stay with the club ahead of the new season.

Aspas had been linked with Valencia and Atletico Madrid after netting 22 La Liga goals – more than any other Spaniard – last season, while Uruguayan Gomez had been linked to Sevilla.

“I have spoken with Aspas, he's going to show us the way and be the leader of this project,” Mohamed told Cadena Ser.

“He wants to stay at the club and as for Maxi Gómez, he's staying for now too.

“My El Turco nickname? It’s because I have Lebanese origins and in Argentina anyone with Arab descent is called 'El Turco', just as any Spaniard is called 'Galician'.

“When Celta first approached me I told them ‘no’ because I wanted to rest, I thought they wanted to know me but they knew who I was and that made me change my mind instantly.

“Before moving here I spoke with (Atletico Madrid boss Diego) Simeone, who told me Celta are a great team and should qualify for Europe…if we do, I will give you all my contract!

“My rosary on the bench? I will always carry it because my son (who died aged 9 in an accident in 2006) always accompanies me.”
