Madrid’s ‘crucial week’ for Courtois

Real Madrid face a ‘decisive week’ in their pursuit of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and are hopeful of concluding a transfer, say Marca.

The Belgian international goalkeeper – who won the World Cup Golden Gloves award – is out of contract at Stamford Bridge next summer and is said to want a move to the Bernabeu.

Madrid have held a long-standing interest in bolstering their goalkeeping department as Keylor Navas has held the number one jersey.

Marca say a deal is ‘very close’ while last week, a multitude of outlets including RMC Sport and Sky Sports also stated that a move will be processed imminently.

The report in the Madrid-based paper says that the delay in the announcement is to give the FA Cup Winners time to find a replacement, with Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel the favourite.

Courtois has two children living in Madrid following his spell with Atletico Madrid between 2011 and 2014, while he has constantly been linked with a move to the European champions.

“After the World Cup, in around eight or nine days, I’ll decide what’s best for me, I’ll talk later,” Courtois told Onda Cero ahead of Belgium’s semi-final with France two weeks ago.
