Lopetegui: Real Madrid is my home

Real Madrid Coach Julen Lopetegui has called the club his ‘home’ and believes he has a ‘very strong squad’ at his disposal.

The 51-year-old was dismissed by Spain on the eve of the World Cup after the announcement of his Madrid appointment and he has been widely tipped to oversee mass changes to the squad.

However, the former FC Porto boss expects ‘only small chances’ despite the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.

“It is special to return to Real Madrid, my home,” Lopetegui told the club’s official media streams.

“This is the club where I learned everything, it is where I spent my youth and it is because of this club that I am the Coach I am now.

“This job brings with it a lot of responsibility but I am ready for the special challenge.

“My squad is very strong and I expect there may be a few changes in the next few weeks but the reality is we have a very strong squad who have a lot of confidence.

“This is the best club in the world and we will look to win everything, starting with the European Super Cup against Atletico.”

Madrid’s only major signing of the summer transfer window so far has been a €40m deal for Real Sociedad defender Alvaro Odriozola.
