Former Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli has reportedly agreed to part company with Argentina.
According to AS, Sampaoli will receive €1.4m from Argentine Football Association (AFA) in the way of compensation, despite being liable for €17m if the country sacked him.
The 58-year-old took over from Edgardo Bauza 13 months ago and initially turned around the Albiceleste’s fortunes, qualifying them for the 2018 World Cup.
However, a 6-1 defeat to Spain in March was followed by a disappointing finals campaign, which ended at the last-16 stage after a 4-3 loss to France.
He was also heavily criticised for a perceived overreliance on Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and some of his team selections, among them dropping Serie A top goalscorer Mauro Icardi from his squad for Russia and barely using Paulo Dybala.
It now remains to be seen whether the former Chile Coach will lead out Argentina’s Under-20 team at a tournament in the Valencian town of L’Alcudia, which starts on July 28, having previously agreed to do so.
Sampaoli’s only European experience came at Sevilla during the 2016-17 campaign, when he guided the Andalusians to fourth in La Liga and the Champions League last 16.
