Molina new Spain sporting director

Former Spain international goalkeeper Jose Francisco Molina has been appointed as the new sporting director of the Spanish FA.

Molina – who was capped nine times by La Roja between 1996 and 2000 – will replace Fernando Hierro in the role, with the former Real Madrid defender stepping down from the Spanish FA.

Hierro left the role ahead of the World Cup to step in for outgoing Coach Julen Lopetegui but Spain’s exit at the last 16 stage had left both roles vacant.

48-year-old Molina spent 11 years of his career in spells with Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna while he also had stints at Valencia, Albacete and Levante.

He has also had stints as a Coach in charge of Villarreal and Atletico Kolkata – who were linked to Los Rojiblancos.

A press conference is expected to be held on Monday.
