Sergio Ramos has hinted managerial chaos cost the Spanish national team at this summer’s World Cup following their last 16 exit.
The 2010 champions exited the tournament after a penalty shootout loss to Russia but Coach Julen Lopetegui was sacked on the eve of the tournament, replaced by Julen Lopetegui.
“Instability is never a good companion,” Ramos wrote in an open letter, as cited by Marca.
“Even so we maintained the cohesion, the strength of our group, the energy of our group of colleagues and friends, but the truth is that we have gone from more to less.
“Although many think we could have done more, we did not know how to do more. Because we leave ourselves on the pitch with our last drop of sweat, the last bit of our energy and bravery. We cannot always win, but we can always fight.
“We accept all comments and criticisms, but let's not forget that winning is almost a coincidence because only one team in this tournament goes home with the trophy.
“Only one has the opportunity to raise the title and take the glory, those who can recover and keep going even when exhausted, it turns them into legends.
“We could do better, we should have done better, but not only am I not ashamed, but I am proud to be the captain of this huge selection.
“If you want to think about failure, you are free to do so. We prefer to think that it is a new opportunity to mourn, learn, get up, grow and keep fighting. We will do it, that's for sure.”
