Atleti’s Gabi arrives in Qatar

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi Fernandez has arrived in Qatar ahead of his move to Al Sadd on a free transfer, it has been confirmed.

Last week, Diario AS, Cadena Cope and Cadena Ser all say the 34-year-old has struck an agreement with the Middle East club, while Marca report an offer is under ‘serious consideration’.

Pictures have emerged on social media of the central midfielder in a Qatari airport and posing with an Al Sadd scarf.

Los Rojiblancos appear to have already signed a long-term successor to the experienced midfielder with the acquisition of Rodri from Villarreal.

Gabi is set to pen a three-year deal which will net him €6m in wages to end the second spell of his career at Atleti.

Having come through the youth system at the Madrid-based club, Gabi spent four years at Real Zaragoza between 2007 and 2011 before returning to Diego Simeone’s side.

The central midfielder has amassed a total of 414 first-team appearances for the Europa League winners but has never been capped by Spain.

Al Sadd are the club of former Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez.
