Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo insists ‘it’s not the time to talk about’ his future with Portugal after their World Cup exit on Saturday.
Ronaldo failed to get on the scoresheet during Portugal’s 2-1 defeat to Uruguay in the last 16, but the attacker – who turned 33 in February – backed the Selecao to prosper going forward.
“We have to congratulate Uruguay because they’re the national team who are in the quarter-finals,” he said after the game.
“I think we had a good game and maybe deserved more, but in football the ones who score the most goals win and they scored two, so congratulations to them.
“We leave here with our heads held high. As Portugal captain, I know how we’ve worked and we must be proud of the team.
“I also want to congratulate the organisers because the World Cup has been fantastic in every way. The organisation, security and our surroundings have been perfect.
“We must go back with our heads high and with the confidence that this team will keep winning things.
“The future? It’s not the time to talk about the future in terms of players, Coach… This team will continue to be one of the best in the world, with quality players and a young group who are close together.
“I’m confident and happy because this team will always fight with the maximum strength.”
The attacker is his country’s most-capped player and all-time top scorer with 85 goals in 154 appearances and captained them to European Championship glory in 2016.
