‘Top spot Spain’s big objective’

Fernando Hierro has promised to field an attack-minded Spain against Morocco on Monday as finishing top of their World Cup group ‘is our big objective’.

Spain and Portugal go into the final round of Group B fixtures level on points, although La Roja are first by the virtual of having received fewer yellow cards than their Iberian neighbours.

“We’re obliged to go out, have a good game and win. If we can finish top of our group, even better,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“At the World Cup in South Africa, we lost our first match but ended up becoming champions, while I always returned home after the quarter-finals as a player.

“However, all that is history and it won’t help us tomorrow. We have to forget the statistics and show that we’re capable [of progressing], and if we can finish first then that’s perfect. It’s our big objective.

“We’ll go out to have a good game and win. We have enough on our plates instead of thinking about what Portugal are doing.

“In order to become world champions, you have to beat everyone in front of you. We can’t choose if we want one or the other in the draw.

“Morocco are a very good team, who have had bad luck in their first two games. We can’t relax, our eyes must be wide open. No-one’s going to give us anything.

“Muscle in the middle of the park? We’re something else, more than muscle. We have our way of understanding football and muscle doesn’t suit us.

“We must have a lot of confidence in ourselves, as well as have faith and confidence in our chances.”
