‘VAR no effect on Madrid-Juve’

Lucas Vazquez upped the ante with Medhi Benatia ahead of Spain-Morocco, claiming ‘VAR wouldn’t have changed’ Real Madrid’s 3-3 draw with Juventus.

Vazquez and Benatia could come face to face again on Monday, just two months after Benatia was controversially adjudged to have fouled the winger in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals, allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to score the penalty that knocked out Juve.

“On paper, if the favourites go out, it’s better for us,” he said at a Press conference for the World Cup clash in Kaliningrad.

“What we want is to win the World Cup, and, whatever happens, it’ll be complicated. The matches here will be difficult, but we’re only going to focus on ourselves, our football and characteristics, and from there we’ll take it game by game.

“The World Cup has shown that no team have won easily. All the matches have been well contested, so the important thing is to grow with each game.

“We want to go from less to more, reach the Final and win it. We want to finish top of our group, win Monday’s game against Morocco, do our homework and then see what happens in the other groups, if Russia or Uruguay go through. We have to focus on our own things.

“The high temperatures come in handy to reinforce our physical condition and help us prepare us for the big matches.

“The mosquitoes are a bit of a pain, but you have to live with them. I’m working to be a a starter, but it’s the Coach who decides.

“As for myself, I can only work, be at 100 percent and always make myself available to the group. if I have any opportunity to play, I’ll do the best I possibly can.

“VAR in Madrid-Juve? It wouldn’t have changed anything. Ultimately, there would have been less controversy than there was, but the referee was right to blow [for a penalty].

“Morocco will be a different game, it’s at a World Cup, where a lot is at stake, and we can’t wait for it.”
