Barca to trigger Lenglet release clause

Barcelona will complete the signing of Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet on 1 July by triggering his €35m release clause, say reports in Spain.

The Frenchman is currently on holiday in which he was due to decide whether he will remain at the club or join Barca, who have actively been pursuing a deal.

Diario Sport now report the Blaugrana have decided to activate Lenglet’s release clause and he will provide competition for Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique next season.

The 22-year-old central defender has impressed for Los Rojiblancos in a turbulent season for the club, helping guide them to the Copa del Rey final and last eight of the Champions League.

Lenglet was the penultimate arrival at the Andalusian club under sporting director Monchi, signing from Ligue 1 outfit Nancy in January 2017.

His current deal at the club expires in June 2021 but his current minimum release clause stands at €35m – seen as an affordable price for many leading clubs who may be interested in his services.

Cadena Cope had reported an agreement to join the Catalan giants and will sign a five-year contract last month, but no deal was said to be finalised.

Barca central defender Umtiti recently penned a new long-term deal at the club, while Lenglet’s talks with new Sevilla Coach Pablo Machin took place at the start of the month.
